Magnetic swipe readers can be connected to EPOS / PC systems
in two ways:
-
Keyboard Wedge - With this connection you unplug your
keyboard and plug the magnetic swipe reader into the keyboard
socket. you then plug your keyboard into the other end
of the magnetic swipe reader lead. This in effect daisy
chains the magnetic swipe reader and the keyboard and
any input from either is fed into the keyboard port on
the PC. In this way when you swipe a card through the
reader the card details on the magnetic track appear on
the screen as if typed on the keyboard. This type of connection
can be used on EPOS systems without a dedicated serial
connection for an MSR and will be the choice of connection
if you want to use the MSR to enter details into a standard
Windows (or DOS) program such as Excel, Word or any database
program.
-
Serial - With this connection the magnetic swipe reader
is plugged into a standard serial port on the EPOS system
/ PC. Card data read from the bar code reader is then
sent into the EPOS / PC system as serial input. This type
of connection is common in dedicated EPOS systems, dumb
terminal systems and systems where there is a serial input
on the keyboard. With this type of connection either your
software must expect card input to come via a serial port,
and/or your hardware must interpret the serial data and
present it to the system.
