Bar code readers
can be connected to EPOS / PC systems in three ways:
-
Keyboard Wedge - With this connection you unplug your
keyboard and plug the bar code reader into the keyboard
socket. you then plug your keyboard into the other end
of the bar code reader lead. This in effect daisy chains
the bar code reader and the keyboard and any input from
either is fed into the keyboard port on the PC. In this
way when you scan an item with the reader the scanned
code appears on the screen as if it had been typed on
the keyboard. This type of connection can be used on EPOS
systems without a dedicated serial connection for bar
code reading and will be the choice of connection if you
want to use the bar code reader to enter details into
a standard Windows (or DOS) program such as Excel, Word
or any database program.
-
Serial - With this connection the bar code reader is
plugged into a standard serial port on the EPOS system
/ PC. Data scanned with the bar code reader is then sent
into the EPOS / PC system as serial input. This type of
connection is common in dedicated EPOS systems, dumb terminal
systems and systems where there is a serial input on the
keyboard. With this type of connection either your software
must expect bar code input to come via a serial port,
and/or your hardware must interpret the serial data and
present it to the system.
-
USB - This connection can be used under Windows 98SE.
ME and 2000. The device is generally automatically detected
and the appropriate drivers loaded. The reader input appears
as if typed on the keyboard as for a keyboard wedge reader.
