EPOS Cash drawers can be connected to EPOS systems in one
of two ways,
-
By direct connection to a PC serial port
-
By connection to an EPOS printer that has a Cash Drawer
Kickout connection
Serial Port Drawers
Serial port drawers connect to a standard PC serial port,
and as standard have a 9-pin serial lead. In order to open
the drawer the EPOS program must send a string of characters
to the serial port. Usually any sequence of characters is
OK, the drawer will open on the presence of data being sent
to it. Due to the power requirements of the solenoid in opening
the drawer you will either need a power supply for the cash
drawer or a specific drawer with integrated electronics that
boost the power from the PC.
Printer Connected Drawers
Printer connected drawers plug into a Drawer Kickout port
on the back of the receipt printer, usually marked DK (6-pin
RJ connection). The standard connection is Epson and printers
generally conform to the ESC/POS Epson standard control sequences.
If sending data to the printer directly, i.e. not using the
Windows drivers for the printer then the characters to send
to the printer are as follows. Characters are given as decimal
ASCII codes (27 is Escape, 112 is p etc) - when sending to
the printer the characters should be sent one after each other
with no other characters in between (no commas!) etc.
27,112, 0, 25,100
When using an Epson windows printer driver or one that conforms
to Epson standards then the following character can be sent
to the printer in order to open the cash drawer. Note: You
must be printing in a Printer Font for this to work
