From November
2002 Visa has revised its guidelines for ecommerce retailers.
To minimise confusion for cardholders all online businesses
must now declare the legally recognised country of trading
of the retailer clearly to the cardholder immediately prior
to completion of payment instructions. It is not sufficient
for it to be displayed solely on the home page or to assume
that a URL that includes .co.uk is necessarily a business
that is conducted in the UK.
This change has been made by Visa who will be randomly inspecting
web sites to ensure compliance. Any web site found not to
comply with the ecommerce guidelines will be referred to the
acquiring bank. Persistent non-compliance with the ecommerce
guidelines may result in penalaties being imposed by Visa
and the acquiring bank.
