SoftEFT Update required for UK Bank Standard Conformance July 1997

For the LATEST news on Credit and Debit Card Procesing please see the EFT-POS.COM website.

There have been some changes in the rules governing the acceptance of payment cards by point of sale systems. Because of these new rules being introduced by the banks it is necessary that the Soft-EFT software is upgraded to ensure that Soft-EFT is compliant with the new rules. The changes will become mandatory as of 1st July 1997, it is therefore important that current software is upgraded as a matter or urgency.
The update process will make changes to the following areas of the transaction processing cycle.

  1. Extended service code checking. The data on the magnetic stripe of payment cards includes a field called the service code. These fields will be changed to make way for chip cards.

  2. Extended expiry date checking. Soft-EFT will now allow expiry dates up to 20 years in the future, this used to be limited to 7 years. All Commidea products are already year 2000 compliant.

  3. Visa Electron & Switch Solo cards. These card schemes have been disabled as it is necessary for merchants to enter into separate agreements before they can accept these types of card.

In addition, the following changes have been made as part of the continued product development programme:

  1. The server programs (HCF, S30Eng and S30Net) have now been combined into one (S30Net) which has a resident size of about half that used by its predecessors.

  2. S30Net now logs significant events (particularly communications events) to text files. This allows easier fault diagnosis. These files are kept in the shared directory (along with NetCtrl.dat) and are called SLog.mon, SLog.tue etc.

  3. The copy protection system on the new server programs has been changed so that the number of points of sale and the communications method can be protected. In future therefore, two checksums will be issued for MU35 systems.

The current update makes the assumption that the site is running at most 3 PoS and that authorisations are obtained via modem. Please let us know if you have sites with different requirements so that we can issue an appropriate checksum.
